Giulio Cesare Vanini, originario di Taurisano, in Terra D'Otranto, fu giustiziato per ateismo a Tolosa il 9 febbraio 1619. Diciannove anni dopo Giordano Bruno. Gli strapparono la lingua, lo impiccarono alla forca e infine lo bruciarono sul rogo. In punto di morte esclamò con fierezza: “Andiamo, andiamo allegramente a morire da filosofo”. Aveva solo 34 anni.
La sua figura, tornata in auge mezzo secolo fa, ha goduto in passato di una grande popolarità. Di lui si è detto di tutto, nel bene e nel male. Anche che fosse l’Anticristo.
In realtà fu solo un filosofo. Un filosofo “più facile da bruciare che da confutare” (A. Schopenhauer). Questo “Piccolo catechismo per atei”, che raccoglie ed isola per la prima volta le sue idee filosofiche più ardite e le sue arguzie più impertinenti, rappresenta la prima introduzione sistematica alla vita, al pensiero ed alle opere di Giulio Cesare Vanini.

Mario Carparelli (1978) è il più giovane esponente della lunga ed illustre tradizione storiografica salentina su Giulio Cesare Vanini, inaugurata negli anni ’50 da Antonio Corsano e proseguita poi da Giovanni Papuli, Francesco Paolo Raimondi e Domenico M. Fazio. Laureato in Filosofia a Firenze, si è addottorato in Discipline storico-filosofiche all’Università del Salento, dove attualmente collabora con la cattedra di Storia della filosofia, presso il Dipartimento di Filologia Classica e di Scienze Filosofiche della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia. Ha partecipato in qualità di relatore ed esperto vaniniano a due convegni internazionali di studi ed è autore di saggi scientifici su Vanini pubblicati in Italia e all’estero. Recentemente ha curato per Bompiani l’opera omnia di Vanini, insieme con Francesco Paolo Raimondi. È Segretario del Centro interdipartimentale di ricerche internazionali su Giulio Cesare Vanini dell’Università del Salento
